Mini Biography:
Carmine, father of Francis Ford Coppola, had been a flutist under Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra during the 1940s, leaving in 1951 to pursue a dream of composing. That took two decades to accomplish, during which he worked mostly as an orchestra conductor on Broadway and elsewhere, working with Francis in 1967 on some additional music for his "Finian's Rainbow". Carmine also composed music, together with Nino Rota, for his son's "The Godfather Part II" for which he and Rota won Oscars for best score. He went on to score Francis' "Apocalypse Now" (for which he won a Golden Globe award), "The Outsiders", "Gardens of Stone", and "The Godfather Part III". He also composed 3 and a half hour score for Francis' 1981 reconstruction of Abel Gance's 1921 silent epic "Napoleon".
