Jerome Moross was already an accomplished pianist at the age of 5 and began composing music 3 years later. "Paeans", the first of his concert pieces to be performed when he was 17, was conducted by his friend Bernard Herrmann and soon after published by Henry Cowell. Other orchestral compositions included "Those Everlasting Blues"(1932) and "Beguine"(1934), notable for his usage of traditional American folk idioms. After graduating from New York University at the age of 18, he contributed some incidental music to the theater, and then composed most of the score for the short-lived Broadway revue "Parade" in 1935. He also composed 5 ballets, of which "Frankie and Johnny"(1938, for dancer Ruth Page) and "The Golden Apple"(1954) were the most successful. The latter won the Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Musical, 1953-4. He was engaged by George Gershwin as assistant conductor and pianist for the last few weeks of the New York run of "Porgy And Bess", and subsequently for the west coast production. His First Symphony was premiered by Sir Thomas Beecham conducting the Seattle Symphony in 1943. He worked in Hollywood from 1940 as composer/arranger, often in collaboration with Aaron Copland ("Our Town" in 1940), Hugo Friedhofer and Franz Waxman. In 1948 he was given the opportunity to compose his own original score for the film "Close-Up". His own scores as film composer include "The Proud Rebel"(1958), "The War Lord"(1965) and "Rachel, Rachel"(1968). He was nominated for an Academy Award for his lush, sweeping score of "The Big Country"(1958). In addition to his film work, he was also active in composing music for television, his best work in the western series "Gunsmoke"(1955) and "Wagon Train"(1957). He created 8 pieces of chamber music, 1964-78, and, his final work, the one-act opera "Sorry, Wrong Number", based on Lucille Fletcher's famous thriller. 「探偵物語」(1951)「ローマの休日」(1953)「必死の逃亡者」(1955)「友情ある説得」(1956)「ベン・ハー」(1959)「コレクター」(1965)等、あらゆるジャンルの映画を見事にこなす名匠ウィリアム・ワイラーが1958年に監督した傑作西部劇。出演はグレゴリー・ペック、チャールトン・ヘストン、ジーン・シモンズ、キャロル・ベイカー、バール・アイヴス、チャールズ・ビックフォード、チャック・コナーズ他。ドナルド・ハミルトンの原作を基に、ジェームズ・R・ウェッブ、サイ・バートレットとロバート・ワイラーが脚本を執筆。撮影はフランツ・F・プラナー、タイトルデザインはソール・バスが担当。19世紀後半の西部を舞台に、テリル家の娘パット（ベイカー）と結婚するために東部からやって来た元船乗りのジム・マッケイ（ペック）が、湧き水の所有を巡って対立する同家とハナシー家の抗争に巻き込まれて行く……。ジムに反感を抱くテリル家の牧童頭スティーヴとジムが夜中に延々と殴り合うシーンが印象的。ハナシー家の家長ルーファスを演じたバール・アイヴスはこの映画でアカデミー賞を受賞した。
音楽を担当したジェローム・モロスは、交響曲、管弦楽曲、室内楽曲、バレエ、オペラ、ミュージカル等を手がけているアメリカの作曲家だが、映画音楽の仕事は全部で16本程度でさほど多くはない。その中でも、この「大いなる西部」は非常に有名なスコアで、この1本によって彼の名前は世界中の映画ファンに広く知られていると言っても過言ではないだろう。特に冒頭の、ビジーなストリングスと力強いブラスによるイントロから明るく雄大な主題へと展開する「Main Title」は、西部劇音楽として最も有名な曲の1つで、「西部劇音楽全集」のようなコンピレーションには大概収録されているような名曲である。疾走する駅馬車を捉えたソール・バスのデザインによるメインタイトルにも見事にマッチした豪快な音楽。続く「Julie's House」は、素朴でコミカルなタッチで、懐かしさを感じさせる。「The Welcoming」と「The Hazing」は、西部にやって来たジムがハナシー家の長男バック（コナーズ）に乱暴な歓迎を受けるシーンの音楽だが、特に前者は躍動的な第二主題で全編を通して何度も繰り返され、メインタイトルに次いで印象的な曲。「The Raid」は、バックのジムへの仕打ちを知ったテリル（ビックフォード）が、ハナシー家に報復の襲撃をかけるシーンのダイナミックなアクションスコア。後半の「Cattle at the River」「Pat's Mistake」「The Attempted Rape」「The War Party Gathers」「The Duel」「Ambush in Blanco Canyon」といった曲は、クライマックスのテリル家とハナシー家の宿命の対決へと徐々にテンションを盛り上げて行く。全体として非常にオーソドックスだが、愛すべき純正アメリカ映画音楽である。ジェローム・モロスは、このスコアで1958年度アカデミー賞の劇・喜劇映画音楽賞にノミネートされた。
このスコアには正規盤のサントラLPが出ていたが、クレイグ・スポールディングのプロデュースによるこのSAEレーベルのCDは、1958年4月から6月にかけてサミュエル・ゴールドウィン・スタジオで録音されたオリジナル・スコアリング・セッションのモノーラル・テープから直接デジタル・トランスファーされたもので、全42曲／約73分の音楽が収録されている。
尚、ジェローム・モロス作曲の以下の作品を収録した新録音によるコンピレーションCDが、1995年にイギリスのSilva Screenレーベルよりリリースされている。
